The NHS e-Referral Service – an improved system for first referral appointments

e-Referral Service

The NHS e-Referral Service combines electronic booking with a choice of place, date and time for a patient’s first hospital or clinic appointments.

Patients can choose their initial hospital or clinic appointment, and either book it in the GP surgery at the point of referral, or do it later at home on the phone or online.

It results in a better patient experience due to greater certainty of appointment, and a better experience throughout the NHS. A more efficient referral system eliminates much of the paperwork and time lag associated with non-electronic referrals.

The e-Referral Service can help deliver cost and time savings, fewer missed appointments, fewer inappropriate referrals, and shorter referral to treatment times.
