Mountain Biking in Scotland

20th-22nd October 2017

For our annual autumn biking weekend the West Lancs Mountain Bike Team is heading back to Dumfries & Galloway in southern Scotland. This area is a mecca for mountain biking with a number of great trail centres, known as the 7stanes. We aim to ride at least two of these trail centres over the weekend.

Our base for the weekend will be Craigshiels Outdoor Centre, owned by the South West Region of Scouts in Scotland. This is close to Ae village, 10 miles from Dumfries. This location gives us an excellent base from which to access the trail centres of Ae, Mabie and Dalbeattie. We will travel up to Scotland on the Friday evening, returning on Sunday evening.

This event is aimed at Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members. Mountain biking involves a high level of physical exercise so participants should have a decent level of fitness. A good indicator is having done (and enjoyed!) mountain biking on County Camp or Connected.

Places are limited so get your application in as soon as you can. Applications will only be confirmed from Explorers who have the support of their Explorer Scout Leader and Scout Network members who have current membership.

The total cost of the weekend, including transport, accommodation, meals and two days biking will be £45.50 This does not include mountain bike hire (see below for that). Please pay for the weekend online at  (Includes 50p card charge)

If you have your own bike helmet, great; if you have your own mountain bike, then even better! However these need to meet a satisfactory level of safety decided by the leaders. This isn’t going to be like biking round Worden Park! The team has mountain bikes for hire for the weekend if you don’t have your own, at an additional cost of £20 for the weekend, including a helmet.

A detailed kit list will be provided nearer the time but good items to have are a hydration pack, cycling gloves and padded shorts.
